Causal Proportionality as an Ontic and Epistemic Concept

چکیده
Abstract This paper is concerned with the content of causal proportionality constraint. It investigates two general versions constraint, namely “horizontal” and “vertical” proportionality. Moreover, it discusses whether considered an ontic or epistemic, i.e. explanatory, constraint on causation in context some most prominent theories causation. The following main claims are defended: (1) horizontal (HP) vertical version (VP) logically independent. (2) HP implied by causation, not others. (3) None discussed popular contradicts either VP. (4) VP epistemic principles as such; rather, they depends chosen plus background assumptions about existence higher-level causes their non-identity to lower-level ones.

Epistemic and Ontic Quantum Realities
Quantum theory has provoked intense discussions about its interpretation since its pioneer days, beginning with Bohr’s view of quantum theory as a theory of knowledge. We show that such an epistemic perspective can be consistently complemented by Einstein’s ontically oriented position.
متن کاملSemantic results for ontic and epistemic change
We give some semantic results for an epistemic logic incorporating dynamic operators to describe information changing events. Such events include epistemic changes, where agents become more informed about the non-changing state of the world, and ontic changes, wherein the world changes. The events are executed in information states that are modeled as pointed Kripke models. Our contribution con...
متن کاملOntic and Epistemic Descriptions of Chaotic Systems
Traditional philosophical discourse draws a distinction between ontology and epistemology and generally enforces this distinction by keeping the two subject areas separated and unrelated. In addition, the relationship between the two areas is of central importance to physics and philosophy of physics. For instance, all kinds of measurement-related problems force us to consider both our knowledg...
متن کاملMechanistic explanation: Integrating the ontic and epistemic
Craver claims that mechanistic explanation is ontic, while Bechtel claims that it is epistemic. While this distinction between ontic and epistemic explanation originates with Salmon, the ideas have changed in the modern debate on mechanistic explanation, where the frame of the debate is changing. I will explore what Bechtel and Craver’s claims mean, and argue that good mechanistic explanations ...
متن کاملThe logic of ontic and epistemic change
We propose an epistemic logic incorporating dynamic operators to describe information changing events, both informative actions, where agents become more informed about the non-changing state of the world, as ontic changes, wherein the world and the facts describing it change themselves as well. A complete axiomatisation is provided. There are some independent semantic results, for example that...
